Nikki qualified from Wits University having used only Final Cut Pro. Once she entered the working field she quickly adapted and learnt how to use AVID. She is capable of using both suites to edit her content. Below will be a collection of editing pieces done from university days to working in the field post graduation. There will be a write-up about each piece as for several pieces there was more than only editing done by Nikki.

Advert

Several years back there was a competition to make an advert for the local radio station. I managed to whip this together in a few short hours and was offered a job in return with Primedia.

REDbark was a short student film completely scripted, storyboard and designed by the students. We were honoured to use an actual film camera later to be developed at SASANI studios. We worked with renowned film maker Shelly Barry, she was an inspiration and great teacher for this project.

I was asked to assist in set design and editing. There are some stills below of the set design.

The ediiting process was a challenge as the sound which was recorded on a Panasonic camera did not sync up with the visuals from the film camera.

I had to come up with an alternative to the original plan. I decided to create the comic book look and feel, so we could add words on the actual screen to be read and have no sound.

This opened our film up to the hearing impaired audience and was well received at the university and several guests that came to see our work.

bath

Bath was a dream project for the fellow student, Adam for many years, hence when we got free reign for our first big project I was excited to be a part of his dream-making team. We sat for hours scriptwriting, storyboarding, blocking and researching. We cast two actors that were to make this small masterpiece come to life. We worked all around the clock to create this world of BATH. I assisted in the filming, editing, location scouting, script and lighting. Many hours went into this project, day and night shoots consumed us for months. We are very proud of the outcome of this short film, which is now part of the Wits Television department's show reel.

This piece was an experimental piece about time and how it became irrelevant in a deteriorating relationship. We explored with re-showing information in a different time, a different place but the same situation. We also explored with stop frame animation as a metaphor for this time passing. As we follow the deterioration of this relationship we see the one common link between everything, the making of the tea.

RUBIXcube

We had this completely amazing lecturer from Finland, she assigned a project whereby we must take existing footage and create a narrative / short experimental piece from that. I came up with this piece. Enjoy!

GLITTERATI

GLITTERATI was an Afrikaans entertainment show on DStv's - KyKnet channel. It was an hour long show of arts, culture, couture, actors, events, restaurants, and all round fun! I was responsible for the assistant editing, comprising of all the inserts for that weeks show. I had to digitise and edit and package all my work, ready for sound editing on a Thursday. I also assisted in studio with setting up, assisting with guests and sets, collection and delivery of anything that was required.

TONGElos

Running alongside Glitterati was TONGElos, an Afrikaans [30 minuet] gossip show. I was the editor for this show, required to edit inserts, package the content and get it ready for sound edit on a Tuesday. I also assisted in studio with Skype set up and getting guest stars ready for their "chat-session".
